Is your Giant Schnauzers seem to love biting? Although Giant Schnauzers are known to be guard dogs, the habit of biting is not considered as normal and acceptable behavior. In nature, Giant Schnauzer puppies tend to bite when they engage in play. As they mature, this type of behavior is not needed or not necessary anymore. So how do you help them outgrow this habit? Here are 3 helpful methods to get your giant schnauzer to stop biting.

  1. The Reach out and Touch method

You can do this method in a quiet room and ideally your dog should already be trained when to sit or stand. Make sure that you are close to your dog’s level and once you are in the floor move your hands towards your dog and do this in a couple of inches at first. If he moves, place him back and try again. Praise and give him a treat if he stays put. Then try to place a treat on the floor, between you and move your hand close to the treat. If he remains to stay put, give him the treat. Keep working on this until you get close to him and the treat each time. When you do this method regularly, this will keep your dog from biting when you try to reach out and touch him.

2. Redirect method

This method uses chew toys to divert your pup’s habit to bite. The moment he starts to bite, move slowly away while saying “No bite!”. Then introduce the chew toy to him. When the dog takes it from you and chews it, praise and give him a treat. This method is also effective during rough play when your giant schnauzer is in the mood to bite because it replaces a chew toy instead of your hands to play with him. Having a chew toy will lessen the chance of keeping the habit of biting.

3. No bite method

This is done by removing yourself from playing when he begins to bite and saying “No bite!”, then walk on by quietly. You can also use a can full of pennies and rattle it once he begins to bite while saying “no bite!” command. When you do this method repeatedly, this will eventually let your dog know that biting causes you to stop playing and his behavior should change.

Giant Schnauzers are not known to be biting dogs. You as a dog owner should train your giant schnauzer to stop biting under all circumstances to lessen the chance of playful biting turning into serious attempts resulting to injuries.
