1. Chocolate

Most people know that chocolate is toxic to dogs, but they’re not sure why. Chocolate contains a stimulant called theobromine as well as substances called methylxanthines. Theobromine and methylxanthines can cause panting, excessive thirst, vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures, and, in some cases, kidney failure, which can lead to death. Dark chocolate contains the most methylxanthines and theobromine, and white chocolate contains the least, but to be safe, it’s best to never give your dog chocolate.

2. Grapes or Raisins

It’s not yet known what toxin in grapes and raisins causes problems for dogs, but these little fruits can be very harmful. Dogs who have eaten grapes, raisins, or any items with grapes or raisins as an ingredient, can experience kidney failure and liver damage, which can result in death.

3. Onions

Onions and other related herbs and vegetables, such as chives and garlic, can cause several gastrointestinal issues. Dogs can experience irritation or discomfort in mild cases, but red blood cell damage, which can lead to anemia, can also occur. Symptoms can start days after the dog first ingested the vegetable.

4. Avocados

Because they’re so healthy for humans, avocados seem like a safe food for pets. However, these fruits contain persin, a substance that’s toxic to most animals, including dogs. Avocados can cause diarrhea, vomiting, and cardiovascular damage. Although avocados don’t affect dogs as much as they affect other animals, particularly rabbits, it’s important not to feed your dog any avocado or anything that contains avocado as an ingredient.

5. Macadamia Nuts

Most nuts are a bad idea for dogs, as they’re high in fats and oils that can cause diarrhea and intestinal discomfort. Macadamia nuts, however, contain an additional toxin that attacks the nervous system. The toxin can cause vomiting and an upset stomach but also; weakness, panting, swollen limbs, and tremors. These symptoms can last for up to two days.

6. Coffee

Like chocolate, coffee contains methylxanthines. When your dog ingests coffee, the coffee can cause vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, panting, and seizures. The caffeine in coffee can also cause hyperactivity and an abnormal heart rhythm. Although coffee is the worst offender for dogs, it’s a good idea to avoid giving your dog any substance made with either coffee beans or caffeine.
