Since giant schnauzers are the largest variety of the schnauzer breed, grooming them may be a challenging task. Thus, you should start grooming at a very young age, so your giant schnauzer can become familiar with it before they get large and difficult to restrain. Grooming this massive and noble breed will require you to have patience and with regular and routinary maintenance, your giant schnauzer will have a lustrous and healthy coat.

Start grooming by brushing the coat using a pin brush with large bristles to remove dead hair and mats. You can also do hand stripping the coat before bathing the dog and this is done by using a stripping knife to hand strip out long hair.

Ideally, bathing is done every 3 months. Being a wire-coated dog, giant schnauzers should be bathed more frequently, with a four to the six-week range. Before you bathe your dog, put eye drops in your dog’s eyes to avoid shampoo coming into it. Use a spray hose to wet your dog and avoid getting it to their eyes, as well as in their nose and ears because they might develop an infection due to moisture build-up. Massage in the pet shampoo and rinse thoroughly starting with the head to prevent soap dripping into the eyes. Towel dry after bathing.

If your giant schnauzer is not a show dog, you can proceed with trimming. Cut only the area between your dog’s shoulders, elbows, and along the body to the sides of his hindquarters. Trim the back legs and feet of the rear, and the hair along the inner thighs and tail emphasizing the natural hairline. Clip the face and neck, trim the ears, outside corner of the eyes, and the beard.

It is also important to take note that brushing your pet’s teeth should be done on a regular basis. Because some dogs are prone to dental problems, these problems will be easily avoided with frequent brushing.

Lastly, when trimming your dog’s nails, the right conditioning and careful cutting should be taken into consideration to have a stress-free activity for you and your dog.

Grooming your dog yourself will establish a special bond between you and your dog, at the same time, you may find it rewarding once your dog is accustomed to being groomed. It may seem a little challenging at first, but knowing and practicing the basic techniques of grooming will let your dog have lustrous and a healthy-looking coat.
