The American Veterinary Medical Association has considered October as National Pet Wellness Month and as pet owners, you are responsible for your giant schnauzer’s health and wellness. Unlike us where we can take care of ourselves since we’re capable of seeking consult with our doctors when we feel sick, our furry friends rely on us to ensure that they stay healthy. So how can we prevent our giant schnauzers from getting sick and keep them in good shape? Here is a guide that you can follow to keep your dogs from any health issues.

Regular check-ups.

Making regular wellness exams for dogs is important to maintain their optimal health. Doing it every 6 months is acceptable to increase the life span of your pet. Your vets can keep a record of your pet’s check-ups and detect any potential health issues before it becomes serious.

Additionally, your pet’s wellness exam should include its weight. Keeping an eye on your pet’s weight can lessen their risk of developing any diseases. Monitoring their weight can help you decide what diet is best for your furry friends by asking for advice from their vets about the recommended diet, pet food, and treats.

Dental screening

Your giant schnauzers should undergo dental cleaning once a year, starting as early as 1 year of age. Have your pet’s schedule for routine dental exams because it helps the vet find and treat dental issues before it becomes difficult to treat. For their home dental care, daily toothbrushing is advised to promote oral health.

Vaccines

There are vaccines that are recommended for all dogs regardless of their age and lifestyle to decrease your pet’s chance of getting infected. Routine core vaccines include DA2PPV, Bortedella, and Rabies

Parasite screening, testing, and de-worming

Contracting intestinal parasites can be inevitable for dogs. Hence, have your vet do a poop screening to identify any parasite that might be present. If you have a puppy, have them screened during ages 8-week, 12-week and 16-weeks while routine screening can be done for old dogs to eliminate parasites as soon as it is detected.

Flea prevention

Screening for fleas and ticks is part of your vet’s wellness exam. Ask your vet the type of prevention he or she recommends to keep your giant schnauzers from contracting fleas that may harm their well-being.
